Our Favourite Things

Written by members of the Christian Heritage Tour in honour of tour leader Stan Klan

1. This group began out as two times eleven, *
With Elaine and Brenda and Jackie and Helen
Stan and his flag-waving, Max and his rings
These were a few of our favourite things…

2. Wandering Roma on bus eighty-five
Some of our party were pleased to survive
1st class train carriages, travel like Kings *
These were a few of our favourite things…

To Florence

Our guide is Stan Klan
Such a fine man
History’s his favourite thing
His repertoire has some really bad jokes
But we think the best of him!

3. All was dramatic in the town of Assisi *
A man kept on shouting at Frank: “Polizei”
Stan took a book in Rome, what laughs he brings!
These were two memories of such things…

4. Trip to Sienna, a glass of Brunello, *
Tower in Pisa, a sweet Limoncello. *
Store where we tried out a perfume that stings
These were a few of our favourite things…

5. Overdressed tour guides, the glass of Murano. *
Pickled pig knuckles, the Isle of Burano.
Passionate kiss from a woman who sings*

Then we caught a taxi home.

6. David and Jenny joined us for the Passion *
Stayed on to give us a lesson in fashion
Concerts, no tickets, Berlin taxi flings

7. Berlin was raining, the bus windows foggy *
All of us tourists oh boy were we soggy!
Brandenburg Gate and the Dom’s great bell rings

8. Wittenberg Plaza: no statue of Luther *
Poor Mike and Jenny: no Vespa, no scooter
Double cod entrees and pork knuckle mains, *
This is the diet on Europe’s Great Trains…

9. Jennifer and Frank their laugh is infectious,
Caught it from Mike so it must be contagious!
Now we’re in Poland train wheels they do sing; *

10. Ten euro gelatos and fast vaporettos *
History’s horrors with Auschwitz and ghettos *
Michelangelo’s David he stands with a sling *
Sadness and joy in our favourite things…

11. Filips our local Guide: Berlin to Krakow*
Gave us some history, some language, some know-how
“Glivice” economy we learnt from his notes*

12. Warsaw was modern, rebuilt in the ‘50s *
Making a new Town Square look Old was nifty
Adam in Warsaw where old Chopin clings

13. We love Doc John and his universe-brain *
Our Kiwi Brenda was lost on the train *
Champion dice-throwers!!! / Kiwi friends sing! *

14. “Vaklav” our Tour Guide in Prague was so caring *
Using 10 cameras at once was so daring
Lunch in a vineyard and “Paris” street’s rings *

When the Tour ends, when we split up
When we’re feeling sad
We simply remember our favourite things
And then we don’t feel so bad.
